WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
For the first time in more than a month, the Saint Francis women's tennis team came up short, falling 4-3 to Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon at the Mount St. Mary's Tennis Courts in Emmitsburg, Md.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In this afternoon's match, the Red Flash won two of their three doubles matches. The winning duo was senior Kelly Dowuona and freshman Gabriela Almanza, who claimed their 12th victory together with a score of 6-3.
In singles action, Saint Francis split with the Mountaineers, earning three wins apiece. On courts one and two, Dowuona and sophomore Dasha Chichkina started singles play strongly, both winning their matches with scores of 7-5, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively. The final victory for the Red Flash came on court five, where junior Reagen Mangan recorded her 15th win of the year with a three-set score of 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.
FLASH NUGGETS
After today's contest, two key winning streaks remained intact. The longer of the two belongs to the current reigning NEC Player of the Week, Chichkina, who has now won seven straight singles matches, while Mangan has extended her streak to six consecutive victories.
The last time the women's team recorded a loss was on March 1, when the Red Flash traveled to Hilton Head, S.C., to compete in a series of spring break matches. During that stretch, Saint Francis won three of its four contests, with its only setback coming against Florida Southern, 5-2.
NEXT TIME OUT
Saint Francis women's tennis returns to play next weekend on Saturday, April 11, concluding NEC play against Stonehill at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts in North Easton, Mass., with a start time of 1 p.m.
