Before SFU
Hernandez was a three-sport standout at Hamilton High School, competing in swimming and basketball in addition to lacrosse. Hernandez was an integral piece of Hamilton's ascension to the No. 1 ranked team in the state as a senior. Through the first four games of the season, the Huskies held a 4-0 record, largely thanks to the play of Hernandez who was averaging 4.5 goals per game, 3.0 assists per game and 17.5 draw controls per game. Despite a shortened senior season due to the coronavirus pandemic, Hernandez still managed to tally 108 goals over three and a half seasons from the midfield and defense.
 
Hernandez played club with the Desert Heat, the top ranked club team in Arizona in 2019, and was a member of the National Honor Society as a freshman.
