LORETTO, Pa. – Junior Jordan Varee (Conneautville, PA/Conneaut Valley) (Conneautville, Pa. / Conneaut Valley) had a match-high 24 kills, but No. 10 Lewis proved to be too much for the Saint Francis men's volleyball team in a 3-1 contest on Sunday afternoon at DeGol Arena.
The Red Flash won the first set, 30-25, but the Flyers rallied for three straight wins 30-26, 30-24, and 30-20 to take the match.
Varee hit .341 and added seven digs and three blocks, senior Shane Conley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) had 51 assists, three kills and five digs, junior Nick Rivett (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) added 18 kills and five digs, and junior Alex Fortney (York, PA/Central York) (York, Pa. / Central York) had seven kills, two aces, eight digs and two blocks.
Drew Pickering had a team-high 18 kills and hit .424 for Lewis, while Mike Iandolo dished out 55 assists, and Billy Sahagian had 13 kills.
The Flyers outhit Saint Francis .424 to .273, and had a 10.0 to 6.0 advantage in team blocks.
The Red Flash didn't show an effects of a long five-set win over IPFW on Saturday night by coming out with a .441 hitting percentage and 30-25 victory in the first set against Lewis. Varee had six kills, Rivett had five, and Fortney added four, while Conley dished out 16 assists in the first set. The set was tied at 11-11 when SFU went on a 5-0 run to jump out 16-11. The Flyers battled back within one at 20-19 and 23-22, but that's as close as they would get.
Lewis, which improved to 16-5 on the year, responded by hitting .433 in the second set. A service error pulled Saint Francis within 7-6, but the Flyers went on a 7-1 run to pull away. Lewis held its largest lead at 18-10 before holding on, in spite of a late Red Flash charge, for a 30-26 win to tie the match.
The Red Flash jumped out 2-0, but the Flyers hit .448 and had 3.0 blocks in the third set in taking a 2-1 lead with a 30-24 win. Again tied at 7-7, Lewis pulled away with a 5-1 run. Saint Francis pulled to within two at 22-20, 24-22 and 26-24, but couldn't complete the comeback.
The Flyers jumped ahead 5-1 in the fourth set, and never looked back. The Red Flash cut the lead to three on several occasions, but Lewis pulled away to take a 10-point win, 30-20, to take the match.
