NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Jordan Varee (Conneautville, PA/Conneaut Valley) (Conneautville, Pa. / Conneaut Valley) broke his own single-season school record with his 16th kill of the night to lead the Saint Francis men's volleyball team to a key 3-0 sweep of EIVA Tait Division rival NJIT on Friday night.
Varee's final kill of the night, his 16th, gave the Red Flash a 29-26 lead in their 30-22, 30-24, 30-27 win in Newark. It also gave him 431 on the season, surpassing the previous school record of 430, which he set last season. Varee became the school's all-time leader in kills last Saturday night.
Saint Francis improved to 12-10 overall, and 5-3 in the EIVA Tait Division. The Red Flash will return to action on Saturday night when they travel to Springfield for a 7 p.m. start in another EIVA Tait Division contest. It'll be the third meeting between the schools this season, with the Flash winning the first two.
NJIT returned to the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center for the first time in nine matches, but Varee, junior Alex Fortney (York, PA/Central York) (York, Pa. / Central York) and senior Shane Conley (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) were too much for the Highlanders to handle. Fortney had 11 kills, while Conley dished out 36 assists and added five blocks. SFU had a 9-3 edge in service aces, and a 10.0 to 5.0 advantage in blocks.
Junior Nick Rivett (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Fox Chapel) had a match-high 12 digs, and junior Patrick McManamon (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon) added six blocks.
