ORLANDO, Fla. – Senior pitcher Laura Caldwell (Bellefonte, PA /Bellefonte) (Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte) struck out a career high 13 batters to lead the Saint Francis softball team to a 1-0 victory over St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon.
Freshman pitcher Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif. / Rodriquez) picked up her first career victory by holding down the Niagara offense in a 4-1 Red Flash victory earlier in the day.
Saint Francis has now won four straight games, and five of its last six, to improve to 6-8 on the season. The Flash will take Thursday off before playing Detroit Mercy at 9 a.m., and Holy Cross at 11 a.m., on Friday. SFU is off to its best start after 14 games since the 2002 season.

Layne picked up her first career win in her second start. She gave up just one run on five hits while striking out four and walking one. Sophomore Raquel Rugani (Montour, PA/Montour) (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) provided all of the offense Layne would need with 3-for-4 effort and 3 RBI. She had two doubles in the game. Senior Kelly Slingwine (Gibsonia, PA /Pine Richland) (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine Richland) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and senior Janelle McCoy (New Paris, PA /Chestnut Ridge) (New Paris, Pa. / Chestnut Ridge) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The reigning Akadema/NEC Pitcher and Player-of-the-Week sparked the Red Flash a 1-0 win in the second game of the day against the Bonnies.
Junior Jamie Dixon (Revloc, PA /Central Cambria ) (Revloc, Pa. / Central Cambria) hit her third home run of the spring in the fourth inning, and Caldwell's gem on the mound secured the victory.
Caldwell finished with a career-high 13 strikeouts, while walking two in a two-hit shutout.
