Red Flash Down Penguins 131-123

LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 16, 2010) – Their last home meet of the season may have been one of the best, as the Saint Francis swim team defeated the Youngstown State Penguins 131-123 on Saturday afternoon at the Stokes Center.

Prior to the meet, the last at home for the Red Flash, seniors Blair Kosela (Crescent, Pa./Moon Area) (Crescent, Pa./Moon Area), Kristen Low (Mississauga,Ontario/Cawthra Park SS) (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park), Abi May (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler Area), Elyse Peterman(Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), Elise Merrill (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring), McKenzie Madore (State College, Pa./State College Area) (State College, Pa./State College Area) and Michelle Mercer (Rockville, Md./Connelly School) (Rockville, Md./Connelly School) were honored as part of the team's annual senior day.

The day started off with a win for the Red Flash, as the 400-yard medley relay team of Merrill, Peterman, Hanna Yttring (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelundsgymnasiet) and Alicia Ford (Whitney Point, N.Y/Whitney Point) (Whitney Point, N.Y./Whitney Point) touched the wall first win a time of 4:03.20. The team of Jessica Dunn (Bristow, Va./Seton School) (Bristow, Va./Seton School), Chloe Pierre (Valencia, Pa/Mars) (Valencia, Pa./Mars), May and Kosela earned the third to give SFU an early lead.

Freshman Kathleen Lyon (King George, Va./King George) (King George, Va./King George) won the 1,650-yard freestyle in a tie of 17:58.93. Sophomore Bethany Lanzendoen (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) was close behind, taking second with a time of 18:36.71.

Madore and Kim Davis (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg-Salem) went three-four in the 200-yard freestyle. Madore finished with a time of2:02.21, while Davis touched the wall in 2:07.57. Mercer grabbed sixth in the event.

Dunn got her first individual victory of the day in the fifth event, winning the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:00.21. Merrill was second in 1:00.31, and Kayla Holldstadt grabbed fifth.

Yttring also took an individual win, claiming the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.93, marking a new pool record at the Stokes Center. Peterman took third in the event with a time of 1:10.40 Pierre right behind her in fourth.

May claimed victory in one of her final swims at the Stokes Center, touching the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:14.79. Elyse Dobrick (Greensburg, Pa/Greensburg-Salem) (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) touched next in a time of 2:14.91 for second place.

Ford picked up points in the next event for SFU, placing first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.16. Kosela finished third in the event, while Davis placed sixth. Ford then went on to win the 100-yard freestyle as well, finishing in a time of 53.85.

Dunn claimed her second win of the day in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in a time of 2:08.73, while Low took second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:33.07.

Lyon claimed another event, this time the 500-yard freestyle. The freshman touched the wall in 5:17.42, and was followed by Lanzendoen again, who claimed second in 5:28.80. Mercer took fourth place for the Red Flash.

YSU's Samantha Roberts took the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.10, while the Penguins relay team of Nishani Cicilson, Alana Kane, Audria Grubbs and Kirstin Walker won the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The Red Flash will travel New York to take on the Siena Saints on January 23.
