Bridge, Grossi Lead Flash To 5th Place Finish at NEC Championships

EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 2, 2010)-Junior Christin Bridge (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) became a part of SFU history with a win in the Discus, and Sarah Grossi (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) brought home her first career individual championship at the 2010 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track & Field championships hosted by Mount St. Mary's on Sunday.

The Red Flash finish the weekend with 68 points, good for fifth place.

Bridge won the Discus toss for the second consecutive season, tossing the implement 42.22m for the victory.  It marks the first time since 1999 that a Saint Francis field athlete has won two titles in two consecutive seasons.  She was already the first Red Flash woman to win both the Shot Put and the Discus since Cycerli Ash turned the trick in 2003 and 2004; now, she can become the first Red Flash female field athlete to bring home two titles in three consecutive championships.

“What Christin has been able to do in three years here is remarkable,” said throws coach Tamara Burns.  “She always saves her best performances for this championship stage.”

Also scoring for the Red Flash in the Discus was Kathryne Kendrick (Armagh, Pa./United) (Armagh, Pa./United), who put up a huge PR of 38.46m to take home seventh place in the event.

Sarah Grossi (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillan) was the other champion for the Red Flash on the second day, winning the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 11:20.50.  Grossi stayed in the lead for much of the race, relinquishing the lead only with 800m remaining.  However, Grossi stayed tight to the leader and moved back into first place with 300m remaining to win her first NEC championship.

“I'm super happy for Sarah to get her first conference championship,” said Red Flash head coach Gordon Thomson.  “She has a tremendous love for running the Steeplechase, and I'm excited to see her become self-fulfilled in her goal.”

Elsewhere in the middle distance, Katie Cianci (Greenville, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) (Greenville, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) took eighth in the 1500m to score points.  Anna Hoffman (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) wrapped up her stellar Northeast Conference career by placing fifth in the 5000m with a time of 18:23.50.  She will compete at the ECAC championships in the 10,000m to wrap her career.

In the sprints, Christy Staily (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) made a mad dash comeback in the 400m Hurdles to take fifth with a time of 1:04.04.  The 4x100m team of Sydney King (San Diego, Cal./Point Loma) (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma), Staily, Julie Morey (Johnstown, Pa./Bishop McCort) (Johnstown, Pa./Bishop McCort), and Alexis Hurd (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) took fifth with a time of 48.51.  Hurd also earned another individual honor, wrapping up eighth place in the 100m with a time of 12.58.
