LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 13, 2009) –The Saint Francis University athletics family was deeply saddened on Friday morning to learn of the passing of Mary Ann Opfar, the wife of Red Flash head football coach Dave Opfar.
Mary Ann Opfar passed away after a long battle with cancer.
“The Saint Francis Family is saddened at the news that head football coach Dave Opfar's wife, Mary Ann, passed away this morning,” said Saint Francis Director of Athletics Bob Krimmel. “We extend our sympathy to Dave and his family. Our prayers and thoughts will be with them all as they go through this difficult time. Mary Ann was a person
of great courage as she fought a difficult battle with cancer and demonstrated a spirit that is, and will continue to be, an inspiration to all who knew her.
“The loss of Mary Ann heightens our awareness of this dreaded disease and the need for more research to find cures for all types of cancer. Saint Francis Athletics will remember Mary Ann as part of our Pink Zone and Coaches vs Cancer events on Saturday at DeGol Arena.”
Viewings will be held on Saturday between 7 and 9 p.m., and again on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, Pa. Burial service will be held 11 a.m. on Monday.
