ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Feb. 25, 2011) - The Saint Francis men's volleyball team returned to the road after completing an 11-match homestand but were unable to overcome a streaking #14 Lewis team, falling 3-0 (22-25, 18-25, 23-25) in Romeoville. The Red Flash fall to 7-7 overall, while Lewis improves to 11-4.
The Red Flash defense was unable to slow the pace of the hot-hitting Flyers, who entered the national rankings this past week and helped their cause by hitting .402 against Saint Francis. Meanwhile, the Flyers' defense played its part, notching 11.0 team blocks to just 4.0 team blocks for the Red Flash.
The first set started out tight, with Lewis holding the lead until
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) pulled the team to within 12-11 with an ace; a Flyer ball-handling error tied the score at 12-12. It would be tied at 19-19, but a block from the Flyers gave them the edge they needed as they narrowly defeated the Flash 25-22 in the first set. The second set was all Lewis, as the Flyers opened up on a 13-3 run and took the set 25-18.
In the third set, though, the Red Flash would dominate early. Saint Francis opened up on a 9-3 run in which Logan Patterson and Colin Sherwin would record two points each. Lewis responded with a 7-2 run, though, to cut the deficit to 11-10 and the battle was on. The Flyers took the lead at 16-15 on a block and held on for dear life as the Red Flash tried to mount a comeback. Patterson pulled SFU to within 24-23 with a kill, but the Flash were ultimately unable to overcome Lewis and fell 25-23.
Patterson led the offense for the Red Flash with 11 kills, the only SFU player to reach double-digits; he also added two assists, two digs, one ace, and one block. Roche added six kills, three blocks, two aces, and two digs.
