NEWARK, N.J. (April 23, 2011) – Jeff Zornig fed a balanced Rutgers-Newark attack that carried the Scarlet Raiders past the Saint Francis men's volleyball team, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round of the EIVA Championships on Saturday night. Game scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-21.
Zornig led an offense that featured five players with seven or more kills as Rutgers-Newark downed the Red Flash (10-19) for the third time this season.
Sophomore middle hitter
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) paced the Red Flash with seven kills, an ace and two assisted blocks for nine points, while senior middle blocker
Eric Syty (Clarence, NY/Clarence) ended his career with 8.5 points on five kills, two aces, a solo block and an assisted block.
Rutgers-Newark hit .455 for the match, its best against an NCAA Division I opponent this season and third-highest of the season. Meanwhile, Saint Francis hit just .141 and had just Roche and Syty with five or more kills.
Austin Pappas had match highs of 11 kills and a dozen points, while Marcin Midura hit .500 with 10 kills and an assisted block and Grant Metheny had eight kills on 10 swings for an .800 hitting percentage for the Scarlet Raiders.
Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) dished out 22 assists and had five digs and two blocks for SFU, which finished the season with a 10-19 overall record.
