HUNTINGDON, Pa. (April 5, 2011) – Juniata's defense gave the Saint Francis men's volleyball team fits on Tuesday night to hand the Red Flash a 3-0 defeat at the Kennedy Sports and Recreation Center.
The Eagles pulled out a tight 26-24 decision in the first set and completed the sweep with scores of 25-21 and 25-21 in the final two sets.
Freshman Logan Patterson had a match-high 15 kills and hit .312 on 32 swings to go with two blocks, while fellow freshman Colin Sherwin had 10 kills, four digs and two blocks.
SFU fell to 10-13 overall in the non-conference tilt, while Juniata improved to 17-11. The Red Flash will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday night when they close out EIVA Tait play at George Mason.
Alex McColgin led the Eagles with 15 kills on 24 swings hitting .458 for the match. From behind the service line, McColgin served for three of Juniata's five aces, two of them coming on back-to-back plays in the second set.
A kill by Patterson tied the first set for the ninth time at 24-24, but a kill by Ross Madden followed by another McColgin kill ended the set at 26-24.
In the second set, Juniata was on the attack and held a slim lead for most of the game. Saint Francis made a run to bring the score to 17-16, but the Eagles held off the charge. The Eagles took a 21-18 lead and a couple SFU errors ended it at 25-21.
Juniata committed just five errors in the third set to earn another 25-21 win.
