CHAMPIONSGATE, Fla. (May 1, 2011) – After a solid second round, Saint Francis University took a step backwards during Sunday's final round of the 2011 Men's Golf Championship to finish in fifth place. The Red Flash carded a three-day team score of 917 (306-295-316).
Sacred Heart claimed the title by shooting a collective 888 (295-287-306). Robert Morris (910), Mount St. Mary's (914) and Central Connecticut State (915) took second through fourth in what was a tight race for the runner-up spot.
“Today was a very disappointing day for us,” said Flash head coach Nick Wheeler. “After playing great yesterday I was expecting another good round but we couldn't make it happen. I thought we could have moved up into second spot.”
On an individual level, seniors
Michael Magalski (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and
Joey Amelia (Chatham, Ontario/Chatham Kent Secondary) led the way for Saint Francis. Magalski finished five strokes back of medalist C.G. Mercatoris of RMU with a fourth-place score of 220 (73-70-77). Amelia carded a 232 (75-77-80) to tie for 18th place, overall.
Magalski's performance also landed him on the NEC All-Conference team.
Junior
Jeremy Foran (London, Ontario/Fanshawe College) also staked claim to the 18th spot by firing a 78 to go along with a first and second round scores of 75 and 78, respectively.
Ryan Coccagna (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) tied for 35th place and
Vincent Adams (Boisbriand, Quebec/John Abbot College) wound up in 43rd place to close out the Red Flash scores. Coccagna shot a 238 (82-73-83), while Adams carded a 244 (79-84-81).
“I need to thank my seniors Mike and Joey for all their hard work during their time at Saint Francis and I wish them the best with their future endeavors,” said Wheeler before taking a brief look ahead.
“With this year being over, we'll look forward to next fall. We have a talented incoming class and I look forward to announcing those additions in the coming weeks.”
