ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Jan. 21, 2012) – The Saint Francis University men's tennis team dropped a, 6-1, decision to a formidable Navy squad on Saturday. The match, which was held at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis, was the spring opener for both teams.
"I am very happy with the way the men competed against Navy," said head coach Paul Tobin. "I thought we had a better chance of picking up more wins since Navy lost several key players from last year. Navy had a very strong recruiting class and brought in some highly ranked US players. These are the kind of matches the freshman need in order to develop and mature as players."
The Midshipmen took the doubles point in straight sets but the Flash duo of
Lawson Barter (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) and
Juan Andrés Pardo (Bogota, Colombia, Colegio Andino) put up the stiffest challenge with an, 8-3, setback.
In singles play, SFU showed some off-season rust dropping the first five matches in straight sets. In the No. 6 position, Pardo finally broke through with a win, posting a, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) decision over Nicholas Gutsche.
In the No. 1 position,
Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) showed a much improvement as competition progressed. After falling in the first set, 6-0, the freshman pushed Marcus Rebersak to the limit in the second set, 7-5. The same pattern was evident in the performance put forth by
Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) who wielded the no. 4 racquet. Rosa fell, 6-2, in opening set before narrowly going down, 7-5, in the second.
Saint Francis makes the short trip to Drexel on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match.
