Cardinals of Ball State fly past Red Flash in three

Box Score

MUNCIE, Ind. (Jan. 21, 2012)
– The Saint Francis University men's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 contest (23-25, 24-26, 20-25) to Ball State Saturday night on the road at Worthen Arena.

“In this match we had too many unforced errors and we were not strong enough with our serves,” head coach Mike Rumbaugh said. “We need to improve on our serve receives too. With that said though, we're playing with teams and battling right to the end. At times our play can get sloppy and it's frustrating as a coach but we're right there we just have to work on being more consistent with a few aspects of our game.”

Despite falling in three straight sets, the Red Flash (1-3) hung with the Cardinals (3-2) in each of the sets played. All three sets of tonight's match were evenly played between SFU and BSU as the Flash held leads in the first two sets but could not pull ahead far enough to earn a victory to keep the match going. Ball State did what they needed to in the final set to take the match in straight sets and jump ahead of the Flash in the minimum amount of time.

Sophomore Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) was the only Red Flash player to register a double-digit mark in kills, picking up 10 on the night. Senior Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) dished out 22 assists against the Cardinals while junior Nicholas Bancroft's 12 digs are the first double-digit dig performance from a Flash player this season. Mark Kochan led SFU's blocking efforts this evening, tallying five total blocks versus Ball State.

Saint Francis concludes its three-game weekend road trip tomorrow afternoon with a matchup in Columbus, Ohio against the Buckeyes of Ohio State beginning at 3 p.m.
