ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Jan. 21, 2012) – Navy won the crucial doubles point by winning two-of-three doubles matches, then won all six singles matches in straight sets to defeat Saint Francis, 7-0, at the Tose Family Tennis Center on Saturday.
The freshman duo of
Lucy Jasso (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino) and
Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) pulled out the sole Red Flash win of the day in No. 1 doubles, besting Emani Decquir and Stefanie Ton, 8-3.
“I knew going into this match that it was going to be difficult,” said second-year head coach Paul Tobin. “Navy didn't lose any top players from last year so the young SFU team was going up against sophomores and juniors. The women are still trying to develop themselves as doubles players, but we have a long way to go if we want to compete well at this level.”
Despite falling short in singles play, the young SFU squad made a strong impression on Navy head coach, Keith Puryear.
"I thought that Saint Francis was a much-improved team from one year ago. They fought extremely hard today," said Puryear, who is now in his third season at Navy. "We had a couple matches that we were in charge of early and they did a great job of fighting back and really tested our meddle.”
The Red Flash return to action on Sunday when it visits Drexel.
