ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Jan. 27, 2012) – The Saint Francis University men's volleyball team suffered its fifth consecutive loss by way of a three-set (15-25, 20-25, 16-25) loss Friday night to No. 7 Lewis on the road.
“We faced a tough team tonight in the seventh-ranked team in the country,” head coach
Mike Rumbaugh said. “Lewis is on a roll, they had a big win over Penn State last weekend and they are a very aggressive team who played a more physical style than we're used to.
John Skarupa (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegehny) was able to side-out for us tonight but we need more of that going forward.”
For the Red Flash (1-5), the most tightly contested of the three sets was in the middle of the match in set number two to Lewis (5-2). SFU was able to reach a 17-all tie and kept the score relatively close for the remainder of the set, until Lewis put down five of the last six points scored to give them the set win. The other two sets of the match were heavily in favor of Lewis as they registered a positive team attack percentage in each of the three sets.
Skarupa and
Kyle Beatty (Meadville, PA/Saegertown) recorded seven kills each to lead the Flash in that respective category. Skarupa, along with
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) who only had four swings on the night, were the only two SFU players to register a positive hitting percentage above .100.
Lucas Behringer (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) registered double-digit dig figures for the first time this season, reaching 10 in the match.
Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) tallied 16 assists in the loss.
Saint Francis gets right back to it tomorrow night when they square off with another nationally-ranked opponent, No. 14 Loyola-Chicago at 7 p.m.
