SFU Makes it Three Straight with Win Over Sacred Heart

BOX SCORE FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Oct. 14, 2012) - Coming from behind, the Saint Francis University women's volleyball won against Sacred Heart on the road in five sets, 22-25, 28-26, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12.

Saint Francis has now won three in a row and improved to 9-12 overall and to 5-3 in Northeast Conference play. The Pioneers fell to 6-16 on the year and 4-4 in the NEC.

SFU battled throughout the first set, but they were not able to grab a hold of the lead. Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) led the Flash with five kills in the first frame.

In the second set, the Red Flash would need overtime to secure the set. Again, it was Zahumensky that produced late to give SFU the edge.

Saint Francis played another tough third set. Sacred Heart was able to fight off any rallies to secure the frame. SFU jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the fourth set after a combined block from Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) and Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion). Williams would go on to register a kill the next point. The Pioneers failed to stop the Flash as they took the fourth set.

The fifth set is where SFU has played well all year, and today was much of the same. The defense was essential for the Flash down the stretch as they had two consecutive combined blocks to take a 7-3 lead. Late kills by Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) and Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) clinched the win for the Red and White.

"This was a tremendous win for us, a lot of character was defined by the team today," said head coach Chuck Mullen. "You need to play very disciplined volleyball to be competitive with a team like Sacred Heart and we did that. I'm very proud of the team and my staff for a great weekend."

Williams finished the match with a team-high 14 kills to go along with nine digs. Wingard and Zahumensky each finished with 13 kills apiece. Wingard also added 12 digs to complete a double-double effort.

Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) had a match-high 46 assists and 11 digs. Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) contributed with eight kills and nine digs for SFU.

Saint Francis returns to action next Sunday (Oct. 21) as they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant at 1 p.m.
