BOX SCORE SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Oct. 21, 2012) – The Saint Francis U women's volleyball team routed Bryant for their fourth consecutive Northeast Conference win, 25-21,25-23, 25-21.
The Red Flash improved to 10-12 overall and to 6-3 in conference play, the Bulldogs fell to 9-17 and to 2-7 in the NEC.
In the first set, SFU faced a 12-7 deficit. The Flash rallied to tie the frame at 14 apiece after an
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) kill. SFU grabbed ahold of the lead and fought off any Bulldog chances to rally.
In the second set, it was Saint Francis that jumped out to an early 13-5 lead after an
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) ace that caused a Bryant timeout. The Bulldogs mustered a comeback and actually led 23-20 before the Flash closed out the set on a 5-0 run.
The third set was deadlocked at 10 apiece before SFU went on to regain the lead and they would not give it up again.
"We're thrilled with this result today. Roads wins are hard to come by and this was not an easy match," head coach Chuck Mullen said. "Our team is playing well right now with the understanding that we can still get better. We welcome this upcoming homestand and hope for a lot support during it."
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) and
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) led SFU with 11 kills apiece. Wingard also registered four service aces and 10 digs.
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) contributed with nine kills and
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) finished with seven kills in the match.
Saint Francis looks to make it five straight when they face Central Connecticut State at home on Friday at 3 p.m., this is the third meeting between the squads this season.
