SFU Takes Robert Morris to Five Sets on the Road

BOX SCORE MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Oct. 3, 2012) - The Saint Francis U women's volleyball team lost to Robert Morris on the road in five sets on Wednesday night.

The Red Flash (6-11, 2-2) lost 19-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23, 11-15 to the Colonials (8-11, 4-0), who remain undefeated in conference play.

SFU once trailed 21-13 in the first set, but they were able to muster two separate 3-0 runs to make it competitive. The Red and White carried some of that momentum to the second set where they stayed with the Colonials the entire frame. SFU pulled away at the end with a 5-0 run, highlighted by two kills from Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area).

RMU jumped out to a lead in the third set and SFU was not able to erase the large deficit. Saint Francis performed well under pressure in the fourth set as they led most of the frame.

The match went to a fifth set, which has been a familiar feeling for Saint Francis this season. SFU has won four matches that have gone into the deciding frame in 2012. RMU again led first and Saint Francis was not able to orchestrate a comeback.

“This match had all the makings of a tremendous rivalry match, both teams really went into battle conditions and we just came up short in the final set,” said head coach Chuck Mullen. “We'll take what we did well from this match and build on that."

Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) finished with a team-high 16 kills, tying her season-high. Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) had a stellar double-double performance with 13 kills and 13 digs. Wingard also had a hitting percentage of .308 in the match, which was a team-high.

Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) continued her impressive play with 15 kills and nine digs. Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) and Hanna Kutny added 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) added 56 assists in the match to go along with seven digs.

Saint Francis returns to Loretto this weekend as they face LIU Brooklyn at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a 1 p.m. matchup with St. Francis (NY) on Sunday.
