SFU Bested by LIU Brooklyn

BOX SCORE BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2012) –The Saint Francis University women's volleyball team fell to the Northeast Conference's best team, LIU Brooklyn, 21-25, 14-25, 21-25, on Saturday.

The Red Flash (13-15, 9-6) played the Blackbirds (22-7, 15-0) very tough in two of the three sets, but LIU went on to win its 15th consecutive NEC matchup.

SFU faced a 6-0 deficit in the opening set and at one point they trailed 17-9. It looked like it was going to be an easy first set win for LIU, until the Flash mustered a six point run highlighted by two kills from Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) and an ace from Brittany Stambaugh (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley).

The Blackbirds were not rattled by the SFU run and went on a five point run of their own late to take the set.

The second set was a quick one as LIU jumped out to another quick lead, this time Saint Francis was not able to recover and they never had a chance to come back.

The third set was much more competitive, there were 10 ties and five leads changes in the frame. SFU held a 14-12 lead after a kill from
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) which finalized a five point rally for the Flash. The Blackbirds went on a late 7-0 run, and again SFU was not able to bounce back.

Saint Francis played LIU Brooklyn very tough and next week they will meet again in the Northeast Conference semifinals, which will be hosted by the No. 1 seeded Blackbirds. This will be SFU's first postseason appearance since the 2008 season.

Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) led SFU with 10 kills, while Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) contributed with eight of her own.

Chelsea Easter (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame Roman Catholic) and Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) registered seven kills apiece. Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) and Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) each added 10 digs in the match.

Saint Francis will close out its regular season slate tomorrow at 1 p.m. against St. Francis (NY).
