BOX SCORE NEW YORK, N.Y. (Nov. 11, 2012) – The Saint Francis University women's volleyball team won its final regular season contest against St. Francis (NY), 25-17, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18.
The Red Flash finish the regular season 14-15 overall, including a 10-6 mark in the Northeast Conference, while the Terriers finished 4-29 overall and 2-14 in conference play.
SFU trailed early in the first set, but was able to bounce back after a 6-0 run highlighted by two kills from
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula). The Red Flash had a late 4-0 run after
Brittany Stambaugh (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) registered two service aces and that would be enough to take the first set.
SFU led the majority of the second set and
Hannah Kutny (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) registered several kills down the stretch for the Red Flash.
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) registered the final kill to take the second set for SFU.
The Terriers took the third set, despite it being very close. There were 11 ties and five lead changes throughout the frame.
SFU jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set and had several three point runs late to seal the victory.
"We finished off conference play strong today and responded well from a tough loss to LIU the day before," said head coach Chuck Mullen. "Our journey still continues into the most exciting part of the year and we are thrilled to be preparing for the conference tournament."
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) recorded a career-high 20 kills to lead SFU. Jeckell also had eight digs and a hitting percentage of .419 for the afternoon.
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) recorded 14 kills, 12 digs, and three service aces.
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) added 10 kills and 19 digs in the match.
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) also notched double-digit digs with 10.
Hannah Kutny (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) recorded 12 kills in the match and
Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) registered 61 assists.
Saint Francis earned the No. 4 seed and will face No. 1 seed LIU Brooklyn in the NEC postseason tournament on Saturday. This is the first postseason appearance for SFU since the 2008 campaign.
