FAIRFAX, Va. (Feb. 11, 2012) – The Red Flash men's tennis team dropped a, 7-0, decision to George Mason on Saturday at Montclair Country Club. The Patriots improve to 2-0 on the season, while Saint Francis fell to 0-6.
“I am always disappointed when we get shutout, but I see what these players are doing out there and I know they are doing all they can,” said SFU coach Paul Tobin. “This is a challenging spring schedule and we are not looking for easy matches.”
George Mason survived no. 1 doubles, 8-6, before the rookie duo of
Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) and
Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory) broke through for the Flash with an, 8-4, win at the no. 2 position. The Patriots rounded to take no, 3 doubles, along with the first point of the afternoon.
“It's becoming a reoccurring theme, coming so close to taking the doubles point and then not being able to close it out,” said Tobin. “We took no. 2 doubles and up 5-4 on serve at no. 1 doubles, we could not hold and lost 7-5.”
The Patriots took singles play in straight sets, with the notable exception of
Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) at the no. 2 position. Rosa eventually fell, 6-3, 4-6 (10-5), in a competitive three-set match.
“Chris and Andres put up a great fight that would have earned us two points,” said Tobin. “Jimenez was up 5-3 in the second but could not break and lost 7-5. Rosa lost 10-5 in a third set tie-breaker.”
The Flash returns to action on Feb. 18 when it visits Maryland-Eastern Shore.
