HAMDEN, Conn. (Feb. 26, 2012) – Despite some tight scores up and down the lineup, the Saint Francis women's tennis team was unable to break through against a tough Quinnipiac squad, falling to the Bobcats, 7-0.
“We went into this with nothing to lose,” said SFU head coach Paul Tobin. “We had some success during the last month with very difficult competition and I know the women have seen it all. Quinnipiac has always had a solid women's team and they did not lose any players from last year.”
Freshmen
Shivani Patel (Leicestershire, England/Repton School) and
Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) put up the best fight in singles. Patel lost in a tight third set against QU's Viebrock who racked up 38 wins last year. Up 4-3 in the deciding set, Patel lost several key opportunities including a crucial hold. Sachs was a break away from taking the second set but could not get the advantage.
Lucy Jasso (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino) continued her string of consistent efforts losing, 6-4, 6-4. She was ultimately done in by struggles in transition game which affected her ability to break serve during crucial points on the game.
“She needs to step up during those important points and close out the games,” said Tobin.
The Flash now takes some well-deserved time off and will resume action on March 17 against Mount St. Mary's and Robert Morris in Emmitsburg, Md.
