LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2012) – For the second consecutive night, the Saint Francis University men's volleyball team picked up a win on its home court, this time by sweeping Juniata 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23).
Juniata came into Friday night's match ranked fourth in all of Division-III. In the opening set, both the Red Flash (3-6) and Eagles (7-4) scored a majority of their points in blocks. With the Eagles up 6-5, SFU went on a 6-1 run to jump ahead in the early part of the set. Later Juniata would go on a run of its own, registering eight of ten points to put themselves up 20-17. However, the Flash scored four points in a row to then take the lead 21-20 and finished out the set with a solid kill from senior
Alex Kane (York, Pa./West York) that gave them the 1-0 advantage in the match.
SFU got off to a flying start in the next set, building up its largest lead of the match and taking an 18-9 advantage. The Eagles would not go down easy though and started to tighten the score up just enough for head coach
Mike Rumbaugh to call a timeout and keep his team focused on finishing the set. Ultimately, two unforced errors by Juniata provided the Flash with enough points to take the set and go up 2-0 heading into, what would be, the final set.
Set number three proved to be the most back and forth between these two nearby schools. In all there would be seven lead changes as the set approached halfway and nine swaps total. The Flash had three chances at set and match point but finally came through thanks to a strong put down from Kane.
Kane tallied a match-high 13 kills and along with
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area)'s 12 kills, they were the only players in the game with double-digit figures in that respective category. Patterson along with
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) each recorded four total blocks, with one solo going to Roche. Senior setter
Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) racked up 35 assists during tonight's loss-free win.
Saint Francis opens Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play next Friday night at 7 p.m. in DeGol Arena when NJIT comes to Loretto.
