Bucknell spoils men's tennis home opener

EBENSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2012) – Bucknell recorded a, 7-0, win over the Saint Francis University men's tennis team on Friday afternoon at the Ebensburg Tennis Center.  The setback dropped the Red Flash to 0-4 on the young season while Bucknell improved to 1-0.

Despite the lopsided final score, the Flash put forth its best effort of the season, but was unable to close out points.

“It's frustrating when we compete so well and can't seem to close out matches,” said head coach Paul Tobin.  “Probably the tightest scores so far against a strong Bucknell team. On one hand I am proud of the way they competed, but on the other hand, I can't accept shutout losses anymore.”

After the Buffaloes took the opening doubles point, SFU freshmen Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) and Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory) won no. 2 doubles, 8-6.  Bucknell outlasted the Red Flash in no. 3 doubles to take a, 1-0, lead.

Bucknell opened singles competition with a pair of wins in straight sets to open up a, 3-0, lead.  Carvajal pulled out a win in the first game of the third set, but came up short as Bucknell clinched the team win.

At the no. 5 position, Lawson Barter (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) battled, but ended up falling in a tie-breaker.

Saint Francis returns to action on Sunday when it visits Lehigh for a noon match.
