Red Flash fall to Rams in close contest

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 17, 2012)
– On its final day of the UMBC Spring Classic, the Saint Francis University softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Rhode Island Saturday morning.

The Red Flash (9-9) struck early with its lone run of the day in the top of the first. Taylor Parsons lined a one-out single and was brought all the way around to score on a double by senior Kaitlin Andler (Evanston, Ill./Evanston). SFU's only other hit of the morning came in the third off of a bunt single by Davina Kachnovitz.

Rhode Island got even in the bottom of the fourth when they collected one run on three hits and left the bases loaded. The contest remained at a 1-1 deadlock until the final inning of regulation when a two-out single by Brittany Julich scored Meg Kelly from second.

Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) (3-0) started in the circle and gave up one earned run on five hits in four innings of work. Senior Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) (4-4) was dealt the loss in a relief effort after surrendering the game-winning run in the final inning.

Saint Francis returns to the diamond Wednesday afternoon with a trip to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on the Pitt Panthers at 3 p.m.
