SFU closes USF Under Armour Invitational with 4-2 setback

Box Score

CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 4, 2012)
– In its final game of the USF Under Armour Invitational, the Saint Francis University softball team suffered a 4-2 setback to Bowling Green State Sunday morning.

In the bottom of inning two, the Red Flash (2-3) had the opportunity to break things wide open but struggled in getting a runner across home plate. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases for SFU with nobody out. After a pop fly to second base and an infield double play, Saint Francis would have to wait a little bit longer to put some runs on the board.

Bowling Green tallied all of its four runs in the top of the third, despite only producing one hit. Defensively, the Flash committed four errors in the inning, which ultimately led to the Falcons crossing home four times.

The Red Flash split the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth when senior Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) came through with a two-out two-RBI single that scored Chelsea Rex and Elise Jancef. It would not be enough for SFU though as they went one, two, three in the final frame of the game.

Rex (1-2) suffered the loss in the circle but tossed all seven innings giving up four hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts.

Saint Francis heads to the Rebel Games next for two days of competition beginning Tuesday with a 9 a.m. game against Lehigh.
