Box Score
MISENHEIMER, N.C. (March 6, 2012) – Coming back from an 0-2 deficit, the Saint Francis University men's volleyball team rallied to overtake Pfeiffer on the road in five sets (23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-13).
Similar to last night's five set loss to Mount Olive, each set against Pfeiffer (11-4) was tightly contested, coming within five points or fewer to determine a winner. The Red Flash (9-10) quickly found themselves in an 0-2 hole heading into the third set but finally broke through to get the better of the Falcons.
In the third set, neither team led by more than two points until the very end of the set. For the majority of set number three, both squads exchanged point for point and the score sat at a deadlock tie on 13 separate occasions. Saint Francis finally made a small run when they needed to, stringing together five of six points to close out the set and begin its comeback.
As was the case for the previous sets, the Red Flash and Falcons battled right until the end in the fourth set. In a set that featured 17 lead changes, SFU and Pfeiffer needed a little bit of extra time to settle this one. Saint Francis held a 22-19 point lead near the end but the Falcons came on strong to tie the set at 22. The Flash had their chance at set point with the score set at 24-23 but an attack error kept it moving. Fortunately for Saint Francis, two unforced errors by the Falcons gave the set win to the Red Flash and kept their chance at winning alive.
In the final set, Pfeiffer held a three point lead halfway through, which was one of the largest leads any of the two teams held all night. Saint Francis went on a 4-0 run to reach set and match point. The Falcons stayed alive in the match by way of a service error and gained possession back in their favor. However, Pfeiffer made the same mistake and handed the Flash the set and match win with a serving error.
Alex Kane (York, Pa./West York) recorded his second highest kill total of the season by putting down 18 on 45 swings to lead the Red Flash. Mark Kochan's 11 and
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area)'s 10 kills rank them as the only other SFU players to reach double-digit kill figures.
Michael Krepp (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) got the start as the team's setter versus the Falcons and dished out 44 assists while Nicholas Bancroft dug the ball 11 times. Saint Francis' blocking was strong once again as they registered 17 team blocks with
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) leading the way with nine total blocks (one solo, eight assisted).
Saint Francis will have some time to rest up before they welcome in No. 6 Penn State March 17 at DeGol Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup.
