Saint Francis women post 2-1 mark to finish fifth at NEC Championships

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (April 22, 2012) – The Saint Francis U. women's tennis team posted a 2-1 mark at the 2012 Northeast Conference Championships, out-performing its seed to finish in fifth place.  The #7 Red Flash crushed #10 St. Francis, 4-0, before falling to #2 Quinnipiac, 4-0, on Friday.  SFU finished its season on Sunday with a dominant, 4-2, rout of Robert Morris (Pa.).

In Friday's outbracket match against the Terriers, the Flash wasted no time in securing its first point by rolling to a pair of 8-0 wins in doubles play.  Nuria Valls (Durango, Mexico/Colegio Guadiana LaSalle) and Shivani Patel (Leicestershire, England/Repton School) did the job at the no. 2 spot and, at the no. 3 position, Devynn Sarver (Mt. Clemens, Mich./Fraser) and Laura Husband (Dawson, Pa./Connellsville Area) followed suit.

Patel, Lucy Jasso (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Instituto Potosino) and Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) swept the nos. 3-5 singles positions in seemingly-effortless fashion.  The closest set of the six was 6-2.

Saturday's match against the Colonials began with a suddenly-rare double loss, but the 1-0 hole soon became a non-issue.  Much like in its win on Friday, the Flash overwhelmed its opponents in singles play.  Valls, Patel, Jasso and Sachs each earned lopsided straight-sets wins in the nos. 2-5 positions.

“I think [the RMU] match was more important to win than Quinnipiac,” said second-year coach Paul Tobin.  “Robert Morris was seeded higher than us despite the fact that we beat them last month. It's a great win to build on.”

“It was a bit tight since we lost the doubles point.  No. 1 doubles won and no. 2 had a strong 7-4 lead but could not close. We swept four singles in which Nuria became our deciding match.”

The Red Flash wraps up its season with a 9-15 mark.
