Flash suffer sweep at the hands of Youngstown State

Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score

CANFIELD, Ohio (April 3, 2012)
– It was the story of two different games for the Saint Francis University softball team Tuesday afternoon as they dropped a doubleheader to Youngstown State 3-2 in 10 innings in game one and 9-1 in five innings in the second contest.

A lengthy first game ended with a two-out walk off single to center field by the Penguins' (21-6-1) Sarah Gabel in the bottom of the 10th inning that gave YSU the 3-2 win. It was the Red Flash (14-16) who struck first though in the opening game, plating two runs in the top of the second. Kaitlin Andler (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) led off with a single through the left side and was moved over one base on a successful bunt single by Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson). After both runners advanced one bag on a passed ball, Chelsea Rex roped a single to right center that scored both runners.

Youngstown State tied things up with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth after a bases loaded walk and fielder's choice brought in both runs. That is the way the game would remain until the walk off hit in the 10th frame.

Megan Layne (Vallejo, Calif./Rodriguez) fell to 4-7 on the year despite posting solid pitching numbers. Layne went the distance, throwing all 9.2 innings and allowing just two earned runs on 10 hits while striking out four. The 16 total hits recorded by both teams in the first game were all singles.

The Flash jumped on the Penguins early in game two with one run in the top of the first. Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) led the contest off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a two-strike bunt single by Davina Kachnovitz. Kachnovitz then drew the throw to second on a stolen base attempt that allowed Garcia to score from third. YSU wasted no time though in taking the lead as they tallied two runs in their half of the first off of an RBI double and later an RBI single to right center.

Two Flash errors in the bottom of the third allowed two more runs to cross the plate for the Penguins, giving them a 4-1 lead after three innings of play. YSU recorded one more run in the fourth and wrapped up the contest with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on an 8-run rule. The big blow of the inning came on a two-run shot to right center by Samantha Snodgrass with nobody out.

Rex (4-7) took the loss after giving up four earned runs on seven hits in four innings pitched. Rex registered five strikeouts in the loss. Michele Andrews (Comack, N.Y./Comack) came on in relief for Rex in the fifth and surrendered the final four runs of the game in 0.1 innings pitched.

Saint Francis returns to Northeast Conference play this Saturday April 7 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Moon Township, Pa. against the Robert Morris Colonials.
