Harvard spoils senior night for Flash 3-1

Kane collects 21 kills, Skarupa 12 in final game at DeGol Arena

LORETTO, Pa. (April 6, 2012)
– On the final home contest of the 2012 season, the Saint Francis University men's volleyball team dropped a close 3-1 decision (22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 24-26) to Harvard on senior night at DeGol Arena.

The Red Flash (12-14, 7-6 EIVA) battled right with Harvard (17-3, 9-2 EIVA) the entire match. In the opening set the teams went point for point for the majority of the set and the score stood at 22-22 as the end approached. Unfortunately for SFU, Harvard picked up the final three points needed to secure the first set win.

In the second set, SFU had built up a 16-9 lead before the Crimson set their eyes on a comeback. Harvard went on a 9-4 run before head coach Mike Rumbaugh called a timeout with his team up 20-18. Coming out of the timeout, Saint Francis got a big point from Alex Kane (York, Pa./West York) to give SFU a three-point cushion. The two teams went back and forth with scoring but the Flash had enough of an advantage to lock up the set win and tie the match at one.

Set number three was as evenly matched the entire way through as the opener and the set was deadlocked at 21 before Harvard edged the Flash with a 4-2 run to close out the set and go on top 2-1 in the match. The Crimson looked poised to easily take the fourth set after they gained a 23-18 advantage before a Red Flash timeout. Following the short break, SFU picked up six of the next seven points to draw to a 24-24 tie. Harvard locked up the final two points however on a kill from offensive leader Matt Jones and a double block by Jones and Michael Owen.

In his final game in Loretto, Kane had a huge offensive night with a match-high 21 kills and a .341 attack percentage. John Skarupa (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegehny), also a Red Flash senior, collected 12 kills for a team-high .588 hitting percentage. Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) was the third member of the Flash to register double digit numbers in kills with 10. Senior setter Ryan Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) dished out 50 assists while Nicholas Bancroft dug a season-best 16 balls. Williams and Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) each collected five total blocks, Williams with one solo effort.

Saint Francis has just one more regular season match to be played April 21 at when they travel to State College, Pa. for a 7 p.m. matchup with Penn State.
