MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (August 24, 2012) – The Saint Francis women's volleyball team came from behind in the season opener to win in five sets against West Virginia on Friday.
The Red Flash (1-0) won the five-set match 14-25, 26-24, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12 at day one of the Mountaineer Invitational.
Saint Francis kept up with WVU (0-1) in the first set, as the score was 8-13 mid-way through. West Virginia started to pull away as errors piled up for the Red Flash. In the second set, the Red Flash traded points back and forth until they secured the set 26-24.
Saint Francis was leading in the third set 5-4 before WVU went on a 6-0 run and never looked back. In the fourth set, it was quite the opposite, as WVU led 15-13 and SFU went on a 7-0 run. That momentum stayed with the Red Flash as they battled through a tough fifth set to take down the Mountaineers.
Senior outside hitter
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) led the way for SFU with 13 kills and senior middle blocker
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) added 12 kills. Junior outside hitter
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) also chipped in with eight kills.
Senior middle hitter
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) had a team-high six service aces. Senior setter
Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) and junior setter
Logan Meinert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) had 19 and 18 assists in the match, respectively.
Saint Francis returns to the WVU Coliseum tomorrow as they are set to take on Loyola (Md.) at 11 a.m. and Northeast Conference (NEC) rival Central Connecticut State in a non-conference match at 2 p.m.
