BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 11, 2012) – The Saint Francis women's volleyball team lost in a dramatic fifth set against UMBC on Tuesday Night.
The Red Flash fell to 3-8 on the season, while UMBC improved to 5-9 overall. SFU had previously been undefeated when going to a fifth set, all three wins on the season came from matches going into the deciding frame.
The Red Flash lost the first two sets 17-25, 20-25 then responded to take sets three and four 25-15, 25-14. The Retrievers were able to outlast SFU in set five, 15-9.
“We made some changes in the third set, with some different personnel. We starting making our serves, we cut down on errors, and that made the difference in the third and fourth sets," head coach Chuck Mullen said.
SFU was competitive in the first and second sets despite dropping both. In the first set, Saint Francis had a 10-6 lead at one point, but they were not able to keep UMBC from coming back. In set two, SFU led 15-10, but the Retrievers came from behind again to take the set.
In the third and fourth sets the Red Flash looked unstoppable. They took commanding leads in both sets and it promised to be a dramatic fifth set, with all the momentum pointing towards the Red and White.
In the fifth set, both teams traded early points. UMBC got out to an 11-6 lead and that would prove to be too much for Saint Francis to come back from.
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) had two crucial kills in the late stages of the set, in an attempt to pace an SFU comeback.
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) had 10 kills on the evening, in addition to a game-high five service aces.
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) led SFU with with 12 kills and 24 digs.
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) and
Chelsea Easter (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame Roman Catholic) each had eight kills apiece.
Alanna Blenkarn (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Pickering) had 40 assists in the match to go along with seven digs.
Saint Francis will travel to Delaware State for a Tri-Match Tournament this weekend, they will play DSU at 1 p.m. and La Salle at 4 p.m.
The Red Flash will return home Sunday, Sept. 23 for the first NEC match of the season versus Bryant.
