BOX SCORE DOVER, Del. (Sept. 15, 2012) – The Saint Francis University women's volleyball team recorded 16 service aces in a 3-1 win over Delaware State Saturday afternoon.
The Red Flash improved to 4-8 overall, while the Hornets fell to 2-8 on the year. SFU snapped its five match losing streak and won in four sets 25-14, 24-26, 27-25, 25-19.
"Getting a road win is always nice and Delaware State didn't give up and challenged us," head coach Chuck Mullen said.
SFU jumped out to an early lead in the first set after several attacking errors by the Hornets, then the aces starting pouring in.
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) and
Alanna Blenkarn (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Pickering) both had early aces that set the tone for Saint Francis.
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) ended the set with a kill from Blenkarn.
The second set was controlled by Delaware State, but the Red Flash stayed with them. The score was at 24 apiece and the Hornets slammed down two clutch kills.
The third set was very close again and needed extra points to finish.
Chelsea Easter (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/Notre Dame Roman Catholic) earned the 26th point with an ace. Wingard and
Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) combined on a block to score the final point.
SFU faced an early deficit in set four, but they started to pull away late. They had a commanding 19-10 lead. The final kill was from
Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula), she led Saint Francis with 16 in the match.
Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) chipped in with nine kills for the Red and White,
Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) had a solid complete game with seven kills, nine digs, and two aces.
Alanna Blenkarn (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/Pickering) led SFU with 19 assists and had a team-high four service aces.
Lindsey Knetzer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) contributed with three aces of her own.
Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) had five kills and four digs in the match.
Saint Francis will return to the court at Memorial Hall at 4 p.m. when they face La Salle.
