BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 24, 2012) – The Saint Francis University field hockey team rallied from two-goals down against Miami (Ohio) to tie the game but a late goal doomed the Flash to a, 3-2, loss.
After falling behind two-goals in the first half, the Red Flash (5-4, 0-0) scored twice with goals from
Carissa Makea (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosehill College) and
Autumn Pellman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) to even the game at two late in the second half. The RedHawks (5-6, 0-0) picked up a late second-half goal on a penalty stroke to escape with the win.
Kate Vitali (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) posted a tremendous effort in the cage making 10 saves but it was not enough against a RedHawk attack that posted 16 shots.
Miami took the early lead on a penalty stroke by Bea Dechant, who converted the opportunity 2:15 into the match. Kaitlin Evans pushed the RedHawk advantage to two goals on a penalty corner at the 21:29 mark. Sid Marcum triggered the play and found Evans for her fourth goal of the season.
The Red Flash came out with a renewed energy in the second half and earned an early penalty corner.
Tia Dudukovich (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) started the set play from the corner and found Makea for her sixth goal of the season and cut the RedHawk lead to one just eight minutes into the second half. SFU continued to pressure and picked up the equalizer at the 50:58-mark, when Dudukovich found Pellman on a break away to even the score at two. Spurred by the offense output Vitali posted six second half saves but the Flash fell when Dechant tallied her second penalty stroke goal of the match with less than nine minutes remaining.
The Red Flash return home Sunday for their non-conference finale against Towson at DeGol Field. The contest is set for a 1 p.m. start and will be web cast live on NEC Front Row.
