Saint Francis Drops Quinnipiac in Three Sets

BOX SCORE HAMDEN, Conn. (Sept. 29, 2012) - The Saint Francis U women's volleyball team defeated Quinnipiac on the road in three sets Saturday, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23.

The Red Flash improved to 6-9 overall and to 2-0 in Northeast Conference play, while the Bobcats fell to 1-11 on the year and 0-3 in the league.

"It's always nice to get a road conference win, those are extremely important and we'll take them where we can get them,” head coach Chuck Mullen said. “We lacked in a few areas today and worked to overcome it and in the end, we got the result we wanted.  Quinnipiac always plays tough at home, they make you work hard to win and we responded."

Quinnipiac actually jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first set. Saint Francis dominated thereafter, including two separate 5-0 runs.

Despite the second set being much closer, the Bobcats did not hold a lead at any point in the frame. In the third set, SFU took a commanding 10-4 lead and never looked back, picking up the first three-set win in 2012.

Elizabeth Williams (North Bend, Ohio/Saint Ursula) paced the offensive attack with 12 kills for the Red Flash, she was the only player with double-digit kills for either team. Williams also helped SFU with three service aces, she has played a significant role in Saint Francis' 1.96 aces per set, which ranks third in the nation.

Lauren Wingard (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) contributed with six kills, Breanna Kochinsky (Nicktown, Pa./Northern Cambria) chipped in with five kills and 10 digs. Kayla Jeckell (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) and Amanda Zahumensky (Sarver, Pa./Freeport Area) had five kills apiece.

Kierstin Kiser (Clarion, Pa./Clarion) followed up her Saint Francis U record-setting performance from last Sunday with 34 assists to go along with two kills.

Saint Francis will take on Central Connecticut State (7-9, 2-1) tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they look to stay undefeated in conference play.
