Saint Francis Bested at Ball State

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2013) - The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team lost the final match of its road trip to Ball State on Saturday evening, 22-25, 21-25, 22-25.

Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) powered the Red Flash (1-2) attack with a double-double showing. Sherwin registered 10 kills and 10 digs in the losing effort to the Cardinals (1-0).

“We started sluggish tonight, but we looked mentally tired,” SFU head coach Mike Rumbaugh said. “The close match last night at IPFW made it hard to keep the energy at a high level tonight.”

“Ball State played very well, and their setter did a great job running the offense and connecting with the right hitters at the right time,” Rumbaugh continued. “We also have to do a better job against teams that are aggressive with their serves.”

The first set was tightly contested and it was the Red Flash who led late in the frame. SFU took a 19-16 lead after a kill by Sherwin. The Cardinals went on to score nine of the next 12 points to take the set.

Ball State took an early lead in the second set at 9-5. The Flash battled back and evened the score at 17 apiece after a BSU attack error. The Cardinals took the set after a late run.

Saint Francis took a commanding 9-4 lead in the third set, but BSU scored eight unanswered points to take control. The Flash kept competing and again evened the score at 20-20. The Cardinals answered back with a 3-0 run to take the final set.

Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) chipped in with 10 kills and Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) registered five kills in the match. Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) and Michael Krepp (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added seven digs apice, and Krepp posted 28 assists on the evening.

Lucas Behringer (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) added seven digs off the bench for the Red Flash.

Saint Francis opens its home schedule next weekend, starting with a Friday night (Jan. 18) match-up with Loyola-Chicago.
