BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 19, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team took No. 12 Lewis to five sets in a losing effort on Saturday evening.
The Red Flash (1-4) lost to the Flyers (2-5), 18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 16-25, 8-15.
Both squads traded points early in the first set until the Flyers pulled ahead 12-7. SFU narrowed the margin to three at 15-12 before Lewis scored two points to force a Flash timeout. SFU scored three of the next four points to make it 18-16 in favor of the Flyers. Lewis scored seven of the next nine points to take the first set.
Saint Francis held their first lead at 11-10 in the second set after a setting error by Lewis.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) and
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) combined on two blocks to spark a 3-0 run for SFU to make it 14-11 in their favor. Roche fire an ace and forced a Flyers timeout at 17-13. Patterson posted two clutch kills late and
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) slammed down the final kill to take the second set for SFU.
Lewis took a 9-5 lead in the third set until SFU went on a six point run highlighted by several blocks from the Flash defense. The score was tied at 16 apiece when SFU went on a four point run which forced a Lewis timeout. The Flash would go on to take the third set after a Lewis attack error.
The Flyers took an early lead in the fourth set and Saint Francis was not able to recover.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) posted four kills in the frame to lead SFU.
Lewis took a 5-0 lead to start the fifth set, forcing a Red Flash timeout. The Flyers lead stretched to 10-3 and SFU could not muster a comeback.
“We came out much better tonight, I challenged the team win or lose to outwork the other team no matter what,” SFU head coach
Mike Rumbaugh said. “I thought they did that for the first three and a half sets, and then we were outworked.
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) led SFU with 16 kills, while
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) added 14 and
Adam Barba (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) registered 11. Mike Kresch posted 37 assists in the match to go along with seven digs.
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) finished with six block assists on the evening.
Saint Francis returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on No. 11 Ohio State at 3 p.m. The Buckeyes bested the Red Flash on Jan. 5, 3-0.
