BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Jan. 26, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team snapped a five-match losing streak and took down Sacred Heart in four sets, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 29-27.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) dominated on offense for the Red Flash (2-6, 1-1), he finished with a career-high 24 kills. The Pioneers (0-5, 0-2) won the first set then dropped three straight.
The first set only saw three lead changes as Sacred Heart led for the first half. SFU took the lead at 16-15 after a kill from
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown). The Pioneers regained the lead for good at 20-19.
Saint Francis took control in the second set jumping to an early 10-6 lead. SFU embarked on a 4-0 run and forced a Sacred Heart timeout. SFU never looked back after the break and took the second set handily.
Both teams traded points in the third set until SFU took charge with a 4-0 run. The lead stretched to six at 19-13, but the Pioneers battled back to make it close.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) slammed down three late kills to give SFU the third set.
The momentum stayed with the Flash for the fourth set. They came out hot and jumped to a 10-4 lead which forced a Pioneers timeout. SFU stayed in the driver's seat until the Pioneers mustered a comeback. SFU took the set in overtime.
“It was nice to see us playing some scrappy defense today,” SFU head coach
Mike Rumbaugh said. “I thought our blockers did a great job also. Congrats to Logan for having a career game tonight.”
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) also recorded double-digit kills with 12 and 10, respectively. Beatty also added 10 digs to complete a double-double effort.
Nick Bancroft (Centerville, Pa./Maplewood) posted a match-high 16 digs.
Michael Krepp (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) totaled 46 assists in the match.
Saint Francis continues its home stand in Sweet Loretto as they face Mount Olive on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
