Red Flash Win Battle at Sacred Heart

BOX SCORE FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Feb. 15, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team took down the Sacred Heart Pioneers for the second time this season, 30-28, 33-31, 25-20.

The Red Flash (5-8, 2-2) saw three players record double-digit kills in the winning effort over the Pioneers (1-7, 0-3).

SFU led 9-4 early in the first set after a kill from Mike Kresch. SHU went on a 5-0 run to tie the match and both teams traded points until overtime. SFU reached 25 first after an attack error from the Pioneers. With the frame tied at 28 all, Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) slammed down back-to-back kills to give the set to the Red Flash.

The second set proved to be another tightknit battle, but this time Sacred Heart took an early lead only to see SFU fight back. The Flash went on a 4-0 run midway through the set highlighted by a block from Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) and Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton). With the set tied at 31 apiece, this time it was Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) and Sherwin who fired the final kills to close the second set.

The third set was SFU's easiest of the evening and it was highlighted by an early five point run to take a 9-7 lead. SFU would not relinquish that lead the remainder of the stanza. Sacred Heart threatened as the lead dwindled to just three at 17-14. SFU scored three straight points out of a Pioneers timeout and that would end any momentum from SHU.

“It was a battle in the first two sets and it was nice to see us push through for the close wins,” SFU head coach Mike Rumbaugh said. “I was also pleased how we kept our composure and energy up to finish the job in set three.”

Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) registered a match-high 15 kills and posted five digs and five blocks. Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) added 14 kills and Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) finished with 12 kills.

Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) posted seven kills and six blocks and Nick Bancroft (Centerville, Pa./Maplewood) registered a match-high 10 digs. Michael Krepp (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) notched 40 assists in the three set match.

Saint Francis is back in action tomorrow evening as they take on EIVA foe Harvard at 7 p.m.
