BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Feb. 23, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team took down George Mason in three straight sets, 25-15, 28-26, 25-17, inside DeGol Arena on Saturday evening.
The Red Flash (6-10, 3-4) defense led the way with 20 total blocks and forced the Patriots (5-7, 3-2) to hit just .157 for the match.
“This is a player's win tonight,” SFU head coach
Mike Rumbaugh said. “They came out ready to play and it showed.”
The Flash took control early in the first set and never looked back. The lead extended to eight at 20-12 after a service ace from
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton).
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) combined on a block to take the set for SFU. GMU never held a lead in the frame, and Sherwin hit a perfect 1.000 with five kills.
Saint Francis kept rolling in set two and took a 6-3 lead after a block from
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area). GMU battled back and eventually tied the set at 11. Both teams traded points and
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) slammed down the final kill in overtime to give the set to SFU.
SFU started the third set strong as Kochan and Sherwin combined on two blocks in a row to give them a 4-0 lead. SFU stayed in control and never let GMU come back within seven the remainder of the set.
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) registered 13 kills apiece. Sherwin finished the night hitting .500 and Patterson finished hitting .522.
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) posted seven total blocks to lead the SFU defense.
Saint Francis starts its month long road trip as they take on NJIT March 1 at 7 p.m.
