BOX SCORE 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 25, 2013) – On the final day of the NC A&T Tournament, the Saint Francis U softball team split a pair of contests on Monday, falling 9-3 to Canisius in the morning game and defeating tournament host North Carolina A&T 3-0 in game two.
Canisius (6-1) opened the first game with a four-run lead thanks in large part to multiple extra base hits. The Red Flash (2-4) were able to cut the lead in half after getting a run in their half of the first and a run in the third.
Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) continued her mini hot streak by doubling in
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) in the first.
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area), also swinging a hot bat, collected the RBI in the third.
The Golden Griffins however tacked on runs in three consecutive innings to end the game and it proved to be too much for Saint Francis in the end.
Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) (1-1) got the call in the circle and was dealt the loss. Rex threw four innings and gave up five earned runs. Parsons was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the game with two runs scored.
As was the case on Sunday, game two had a much better end result for the Flash. The matchup with North Carolina A&T (0-2) was a tightly contested scoreless ballgame until Saint Francis capped off a three-run bottom of the sixth.
Freshman
Samantha Thomas (Sterling, Va./Park View) sent a single right back up the middle to lead off the inning and advanced all the way to third on a sac bunt by
Misty Hammel (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) and a wild pitch. With her first hit of the season,
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) placed a double down the left field line to score Thomas from third. Kachnovitz then scored herself on a single by Cosentino in the next at-bat. After Neeb reached on an error,
Kate Blattenberger (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) chipped in for the final Flash run when she singled through the left side.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) (1-1) pitched an outstanding game for SFU, tossing all seven innings of shutout ball and giving up just four hits. The freshman also lauded nine strikeouts in her first collegiate victory.
Parsons, Cosentino and Neeb were all selected to the all-tournament team for their performances the past two days.
Saint Francis hits the road for another tournament this weekend at the UMBC Spring Classic in Baltimore, Md. The Flash take on Saint Peter's Friday March 1 at 4 p.m. to open tournament action.
