BOX SCORE UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (Feb. 8, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team fell to the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions, 15-25, 21-25, 17-25 on Friday evening.
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) led the Red Flash (4-7, 1-2) offense with nine kills and a .571 hitting percentage. The Nittany Lions (9-1, 3-0) defense proved to be too much as they posted 15 total blocks.
“It came down to service receiving tonight and we didn't go a good job with that,” SFU head coach
Mike Rumbaugh said. “Penn State is always one of the best teams we play and we needed to execute better.”
PSU jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set forcing a SFU timeout. Out of the break, SFU could not organize a comeback.
It was Saint Francis who took an early 4-2 lead in the second stanza. Both teams traded points back and forth and the Red Flash forced a PSU timeout at 21-20 after a 3-0 run. The Nittany Lions went on a 4-1 run out of the break to take the set.
PSU embarked on an 8-2 run to start the third frame which forced a Red Flash timeout. PSU held a 24-14 lead before SFU responded with a 3-0 run, but it was not enough.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) posted 11 kills and
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) chipped in with five kills. Sherwin was the team leader in digs with six.
Saint Francis returns to action on Sunday as they take on Lees-McRae at 2 p.m.
