Temple hands SFU a pair of road losses

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 AMBLER, Pa. (March 24, 2013) – The Saint Francis U softball team was dealt a pair of losses Sunday afternoon, falling 10-4 and 2-1 at the hands of the Temple Owls.

Temple (9-14) jumped on the Red Flash (15-10) early in game one, plating one in the bottom of the first and four in the second. Ali Robinson came through with a one-out grand slam for the Owls in inning two.

Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson) sparked some life back into the Flash when she led off the top of the fifth with a monster solo shot over the right center field fence. Darneille's long ball, her second of the season, was the first hit of the game for SFU.

Saint Francis posted its best scoring chance in the top of the sixth, down 5-1. With the bases loaded and no outs, Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) and Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) collected back-to-back singles, cutting the lead to 5-3. Darneille lined out hard to the center fielder in the next at-bat. Kachnovitz was caught leaning off second and Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) tagged from third too soon on the play, resulting in an inning ending triple play for the Owls.

Temple's Ali Robinson seemingly put an end to any chance of an SFU comeback as she launched her second grand slam of the game in the sixth. The homerun gave the Owls a 10-3 advantage. Cosentino singled home a run in the top of the seventh that scored SFU's fourth run.

Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) started in the circle for SFU but was replaced in the bottom of the second by Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola). Rex threw the remainder of the contest, striking out four.

In the top of inning three in game two, Temple's second baseman misplayed a rocket line drive hit by Cosentino that allowed Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) to score and put SFU up 1-0 early on.

Starting pitcher Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) got into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth after letting up two free passes to start the frame. The freshman hurler settled in though to record three consecutive outs via a strikeout, sacrifice bunt and groundout.

DeVries' no-hit bid entered the bottom of the seventh but with a 2-2 count, Temple's Steph Pasquale connected on a solo homerun to center field that also tied the game at 1-1. The next Owls batter singled and advance all the way to third with one out by way of a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball. The runner then scored the game winning run on a sac fly to right.

DeVries (10-6) was dealt the loss despite giving up just the two hits in the seventh frame. She also tied a career-high by throwing nine strikeouts.

Saint Francis remains on the road for a doubleheader at Akron this Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.
