Saint Francis Drops Heartbreaker at George Mason

BOX SCORE FAIRFAX, Va. (March 29, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team lost to George Mason in five sets, 19-25, 25-22, 12-25, 25-17, 14-16 on Friday night.

The Red Flash (8-15, 5-7) took down the Patriots (12-10, 9-2) at home in the first meeting on Feb. 23.

SFU trailed early in the first set and was forced to take a timeout when the lead extended to four at 12-8. The lead increased, but SFU made a late three point run highlighted by an ace from Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area). GMU took a timeout and then scored the final point to take the set.

The Patriots took a quick 4-0 lead to start the second set, but the Flash responded with two separate 4-0 runs and took a 12-10 lead. GMU trailed by just one at 23-22, before Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) each recorded kills to give SFU the set.

The third set was dominated by George Mason. The Patriots took an early 9-1 lead and the Flash could not recover.

Saint Francis took an 11-6 lead in the fourth set which forced a GMU timeout. The Flash extended its lead to nine at 20-11 after an attack error from the Patriots. SFU would go on to take the fourth set.

Both teams traded points in the fifth set and the scored was eventually all tied up at 10. GMU had two short runs to gain momentum before SFU threatened with a three-point run to tie the frame at 14 apiece. GMU then went on to score the two final points to take the match.

Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) finished with 12 kills to lead the Flash, Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) followed with nine. Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) added eight kills, while Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) posted six.

Nick Bancroft (Centerville, Pa./Maplewood) had a team-high 12 digs and Mike Kresch recorded 31 assists and 10 digs.

Saint Francis will make the trek to Grand Canyon for two matches next weekend.
