Men, women advance on first day of NEC Tennis Championships

-- The 2013 NEC Men's and Women's Tennis Championships kicked off on Thursday under cloudy and breezy conditions at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. The first day of competition at the sprawling New Jersey venue consisted of feed-in matches leading into Friday's quarterfinals.

On the women's side, #6 Saint Francis U advanced with a 4-0 win over #11 St. Francis Brooklyn. The Red Flash dropped just five games in the match with sophomores Shivani Patel (Leicestershire, England/Repton School), Alex Sachs (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) and Camila Diaz (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio La Piedad) all posting 6-0, 6-0 victories. The SFU women will now meet #3 LIU Brooklyn in the quarters.

For the men, in the most competitive match of the day, #8 Saint Francis U edged #9 St. Francis Brooklyn, 4-2. Senior Andres Rosa (Carolina, Puerto Rico/Colegio la Piedad) beat SFC's Evan Vrsaljko, 7-5, 6-0 and sophomore Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) ousted the Terriers' Ricardo Garcia, 7-6 (5), 6-1 to help clinch the victory. Top-seeded Bryant will square off with the Frankie men in Friday's quarterfinals.
