BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (April 19, 2013) – The Saint Francis University men's volleyball team earned its second win of the season over the NJIT Highlanders, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21, on Friday evening.
The Red Flash (11-15, 6-7) posted 27 total blocks on the evening compared to the Highlanders (7-20, 4-9) eight.
“It was nice to win in three sets over NJIT, because they always give us a good battle and it could have gone five,” SFU head coach
Mike Rumbaugh said. “It was also nice to see Logan lead the team and back up his All-EIVA first team selection.”
Both teams were trading points in the first set with neither team embarking on a long run. A combined block by
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) and
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) gave SFU some momentum as they took a one point lead. Saint Francis was then able to take a three point lead at 19-16 after a kill from
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area). Another kill from Patterson gave SFU the first set.
The Red Flash jumped out to a commanding 9-3 lead in the second set after a kill from
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown). After a combined block from Roche and Patterson giving SFU a 14-9 lead, the Highlanders took a timeout. SFU continued to hold a lead before NJIT narrowed the margin to three at 20-17. A combined block from
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Sherwin forced another Highlanders timeout. Sherwin gave SFU the second set with the final kill.
Saint Francis again cruised to a 5-1 lead, which forced an early NJIT timeout. The Flash continued to hold a lead and it extended to seven at 20-13 after a service error from the Highlanders.
Xavier Krause (Butler, Pa./Butler) capped off the evening for SFU with back-to-back kills to take the third set.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) finished with 13 kills for the Flash, while
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) added seven. Patterson and
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) each posted seven blocks in the match.
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) led the team in digs with nine.
Saint Francis will wrap up its 30th varsity season tomorrow as it hosts Rutgers-Newark for a 2 p.m. match-up on senior day. SFU beat the Scarlet Raiders in three sets on March 2.
