Flash Win First of Two at Grand Canyon

BOX SCORE PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 5, 2013) - The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team won a five-set match against Grand Canyon University on Friday night, 25-14, 17-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-11.

Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) led the Red Flash (9-15) offense with a match-high 18 kills, while the Antelopes (14-13) were led by Ben Ponnet, who registered 17 kills.

SFU jumped out to a quick 11-7 lead after a solo block from Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area). The Flash then went on a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 16-9. Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) added two kills and Patterson had back-to-back aces during the run. The lead extended to nine at 22-13 after an ace from Lucas Behringer (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and SFU would go on to take the set handily.

It was GCU that took the early lead in set two, but the Flash were able to tie the frame at eight after a kill from Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe). The Lopes' were able to mount a run to take a 20-11 lead and SFU was not able to recover.

Set three was a tightly contested battle, but GCU embarked on a 10-4 run to start the frame. The lead extended to seven at 17-10 before SFU started to mount a comeback. The Flash went on a 4-0 run highlighted by a block from Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Michael Krepp (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). Eventually, SFU tied the set at 22 apiece and forced an Antelopes timeout. With the set tied at 24, GCU would score two straight to take the set in overtime.

The fourth set also saw early ties and lead changes before SFU took a 14-10 lead to force a GCU timeout. Out of the break, both teams traded points and a late 4-0 run gave the Flash the edge to take the fourth frame and force a fifth set.

SFU led the entire time in set five and jumped out to a 10-7 lead. GCU got within two after an SFU service error, but the Flash had a late 4-0 run to seal the victory.

Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) finished with 12 kills and 13 digs to complete a double-double effort. Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) posted eight kills, while Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) added seven. Mike Kresch registered 36 assists in the match.

SFU will play Grand Canyon again tomorrow evening, the match-up is scheduled for 8 p.m. (EST).
