BOX SCORE PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 6, 2013) – The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team earned its second straight victory over the Grand Canyon Antelopes on Saturday evening, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24, 29-27.
The Red Flash (10-15) lost the first set, and then went on to take the next three against the Antelopes (14-14).
Grand Canyon took a 10-4 lead over SFU in the first set and extended its lead to nine at 15-6. SFU tried to mount a comeback late sparked by two aces from
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton), but the Lopes' took the first frame.
SFU held an early lead in the second set at 7-5. The Flash continued to hold a lead and forced a Grand Canyon at 21-18. Out of the break, SFU had a late 3-0 run and went on to take the set.
The third set proved to be a tightly contested battle as both teams traded points early, the set totaled 12 ties. SFU had another late 3-0 run, but GCU managed to tie the set at 24. SFU then scored the next two points to take the third set.
GCU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set and continued to lead until SFU tied it up at 17 all. The Antelopes then took a 23-20 lead which forced a timeout from SFU. The Flash went on a 4-0 run to take a one point lead. With the set tied at 27, SFU went on to score two points to take the match.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) posted 14 kills to lead SFU, while
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) each added 12.
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) posted eight total blocks and
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) registered 10 kills.
Saint Francis returns home for its final home stand to face NJIT on April 19 at 7 p.m.
