FULL RESULTS GEORGE MASON
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – (1/21/14) The Red Flash men's tennis team suffered a tuff, 7-0, loss Navy to kick off the 2014 season.
Navy (1-1) took an early, 1-0 lead over Saint Francis (0-2) in doubles winning 6-0 in the no. 1 doubles and clinched the doubles point in no. 2 doubles, 6-1.
"Navy is a strong team and they jumped out to a lead quickly in doubles and we weren't able to recover," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "With the new format, the guys found out just how important it is to get off to a fast start." "In singles, the guys competed better and made a very solid Navy squad work." "While we weren't able to win any matches, I think we can learn a lot from this match and apply it to future matches."
Moving into singles, the men battled back and forth with the midshipmen, but could not muster a singles win.
Sunday's match featured SFU vs. George Mason that began on a high note as the Red Flash took an early lead winning the no. 1 doubles match, 6-3. GM (1-0) rallied to beat the Frankies (0-2), 5-2.
Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) and
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) Fernandez topped George Mason's Jimmy Lange and Joe Hill, but the Flash dropped the second and third matches as the Dukes took a 1-0 lead going into singles.
"I was very happy with how competitive a match we had with George Mason," said Coach Castille. "They are a tough team, picked to finish 5th in the A10 Conference, and we battled with them in every match." "Five out of the six singles matches really could have gone either way. With the new format, we will need to work on pressure points and closing out games." "Overall, I was really pleased with how we played."
Gervais continued to thrive as he cranked out a no. 1 singles win over George Mason's Jimmy Lange. Gervais was down early in the first set, 2-6 before coming back to take down Lange, 6-4, 6-5 (5). George Mason claimed the match in the second set as Hill battled Tico. Tico took an early, 6-5 (6), lead, but Hill responded by winning the match, 6-5 (6), 6-5 (6).
SFU's second point came in the no. 6 singles as
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) defeated Conor Moran, 6-1, 6-3.
"In doubles, I think we learned from the slow start we had against Navy and played much better, said Coach Castille. "We can take a lot of positives away from this weekend as well as several things we know we need to keep working on and we'll apply them in practice this week as we prepare for a good St. Bonaventure team."
Saint Francis next heads to Olean N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure January 26.
